Sometimes It's Okay To Cheat Apple Dumplings
What???? Mama did you just say its okay to cheat?
Yes, sweet pea. That's what Mama said. Generally speaking it is not okay to cheat on anything... tests, taxes, spouses. But there is one exception to the rule. Cooking. I like to cheat at cooking any time that I can; so, this recipe works well for me. It tastes like a recipe that should have you knuckles deep in flour but you'll not even work up a sweat with these. There are many versions of these easy apple dumplings on the internet. Here's the one that my family uses.
Gather the following ingredients:
- 1/4 stick cup butter (Mom uses 1/2 cup but I tried to lighten it up a bit)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 cup of sugar
- 1 tart apple
- 1 package of refrigerated crescent rolls (I used reduced fat but feel free to go full fat.)
- 10 oz of Mountain Dew (about 1/2 bottle)
- Pam or other cooking spray
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and peel apple.
(Drinking coffee from Harry Potter cup while peeling is optional.)
Cut apple into 8 pieces.
Unroll crescent rolls. Wrap each of the apple pieces individually into one crescent triangle.
This is what they look like all wrapped up. Wrap up the remaining 7 apple pieces. Put the 8 apple dumplings in a greased baking dish.
Melt 1/4 cup of butter, stir in cinnamon and sugar.
Until you end up with this buttery, crumbly goodness.
Spread mixture of crumbly goodness over apples.
Pour 1/2 bottle of Mountain Dew over top of apple dumplings. Bake in oven for 45 minutes.
(Optional, let hubs finish off bottle of Mtn Dew. Especially if he just made you a cup of coffee.)
45 minutes is a long time to wait... I like to entertain myself by watching Choppy, my dog, beg for apple peels. She loves 'em.
45 minutes later... mmmmmm. Your kitchen will smell like heaven.
Let them cool and serve with ice cream.
They are super hero and sweet pea approved! :)
