To be a Mommy or Teacher?

I just don't have the heart to tell him that word has another "t".

Okay, so the teacher in me knows that this is a "teachable moment". An opportunity to teach him about homophones.  An opportunity to teach him about conjunctions.  Sing a song.  "Conjunction junction, what's your function?"  But I chose neither to enlighten him or entertain him by singing.  I chose to laugh with him.  Because isn't engagement important too?  Silver and Strong & John Antonetti say so.  Brain research says that if you can tie an emotion to learning, there is a greater chance of new knowledge retention.  So, that's what I'm going with tonight.  Trust me there is a lot of emotion tied to this word.  He laughs so hard he falls to the floor.  And he has correctly read the word 3 times on his word ring and in his book.  He even understood in his book that it didn't mean "butt".  So, he's assimilating and accommodating this new information.  Jean Piaget would be proud.  I think it'll be fine to leave that discussion of the other "t" for another day.  We'll be like Scarlet and just think about that tomorrow.  Today I choose Mommy over teacher.   :)
